The ACT is a college admissions examination intended to assess high school students' general educational development and ability to complete college-level work. It used to be that the SAT was taken by students on the West and East Coasts, while students in the middle of the country took the ACT. Over the past few years, however, the ACT has gained in prominence throughout the country.

The SAT Reasoning Test is a standardized exam intended to assess a student's high school achievement and readiness for college and to help determine college admissions. Students typically take the SAT for the first time in the spring of their junior year and, if necessary, again in the fall of senior year. Compare with the ACT, which many colleges accept interchangeably with the SAT.

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a standardized test used as an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in the U.S. and in other English-language countries worldwide. The exam aims to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills. The degree to which schools (and departments within schools) emphasize the test in the admissions process varies widely.

The LSAT (Law School Admission Test) is a standardized test required by all American Bar Association-approved law schools and taken by prospective candidates for Juris Doctor and graduate law programs. The LSAT is administered four times a year, and applicants cannot take the test more than three times within a two-year period.

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is a standardized test intended to measure an applicant's aptitude to succeed academically in graduate business studies. Business schools use the test as a criterion for admission to graduate business administration programs, such as MBA and Master of Accountancy. Some universities accept the GRE as an alternative to the GMAT.

The MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) is a computer-based standardized examination for prospective medical students. Most people who take the MCAT do so during their Junior or Senior years in college before they apply to medical school. The exam is offered 25 or more times per year at Prometric centers. Almost all U.S. medical schools require applicants to submit MCAT exam scores. Many schools do not accept MCAT exam scores more than three years old.

The ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) is an entrance exam used by many independent schools and magnet schools in the United States, and is intended to provide a standard assessment of skills to rank a student's abilities and achievement to others applying to the same grade. Schools use the ISEE scores as one piece of the overall student profile for applicant consideration. The ISEE has three levels: Lower level, for entrance into grades 5-6; Middle level, for entrance into grades 7-8; and Upper level, for entrance into grades 9-12.

The SHSAT (Specialized High Schools Admission Test) is an examination administered to eighth and ninth grade students residing in New York City and is used to determine admission to most of the city's specialized public high schools, such as Stuyvesant and Bronx Science. The test is given each fall for admission the following school year.

The SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) is an aptitude test administered to students in grades five to eleven to help determine admission to independent or private middle and upper schools. Schools use the ISEE scores as one piece of the overall student profile for applicant consideration. The SSAT is administered on two levels: Lower (for students currently in grades 5-7) and Upper (for students currently in grades 8-11)

The TACHS (Test for Admission into Catholic High School) is the admission test for Catholic Schools in and around New York City. The test is designed to allow schools to compare the academic abilities of prospective students. Some schools use the test to determine which students receive scholarships.

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) evaluates the ability of an individual to use and understand English in an academic setting and is used as an admissions requirement for non-native English speakers at many English-speaking colleges and universities. Additionally, institutions such as government agencies, licensing bodies, businesses, or scholarship programs may require the test.

The PLAN is a standardized test intended to measure academic progress, to indicate readiness for the ACT, and to guide students in future career choices. Also not required for college admissions, the PLAN covers similar content and includes the same question types as the ACT.

The PSAT (Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a standardized test intended to indicate preparation for the SAT and to serve as the primary criterion for the awarding of National Merit Scholarships. Although the test is not required for college admissions, many high schools administer the PSAT in tenth and/or eleventh grades in order to prepare their students for the SAT. The PSAT and SAT are similar in content and question types, but the PSAT is only about half as long as the SAT and does not include an essay section.
